Hungarian Numismatic Society

I’m spending some time in Hungary, where I grew up, and there is something I have missed while I lived here. I did not learn much about Hungarian coin collecting. So, last week, I found an interesting presentation to attend, the only one while I’m here.

It was organized by the Hungarian Numismatic Society, as their monthly presentation. The topic was hard times currency in Veszprem County. Practically, nothing I knew anything about.

I definitely wanted to meet the numismatists here and learn about their work, so I was ready to attend anything they threw at me. Which turned out to be a great idea. Maybe I should read and learn more about areas of interests which do not necessarily match my collecting habits.

I had no idea that Veszprem County had any unofficial notes and hard times currencies, let alone that many other counties did. The presenter, Miklos Elek called our attention to the fact that this is a very under researched area, and it could use quite a bit of work and it is a great research area to get into.

Unfortunately, this presentation didn’t inspire me to start collecting notes, for the reasons I discussed earlier on this blog, notes and paper currency is even more difficult to enjoy without vision, and I simply didn’t get interested. However, I don’t think it is impossible. But I definitely learned something I would like to know more about.

I’m also toying with the idea of joining a couple of Hungarian collector groups. Sometimes I feel like I’m collecting memberships, too, but just like many other memberships, these also come with some publications I couldn’t get from anywhere else.
