1 Cent 1985 82 The old coat of arms of South Africa. This consists of a number of different components. In the center is a shield divided into four sections. The top left section has a woman draped in flowing robes and holding an anchor in her left hand. This is the figure of Hope. The top right section has two wildebeests (gnus) charging from right to left, one above the other, tails up and heads down, with ears tucked forward. In the bottom left section is an orange tree, and in the bottom right section is an ox wagon (known in America as a covered wagon). On top of this shield rests a knight’s helmet, facing left. It has a large expanse of cloth fastened to it with a striped headband, and the cloth spreads out behind it forming lichen-like shapes. Standing on top of the helmet is a lion with body in left-facing profile but with its head facing forward and its tongue sticking out. Its enormous tail is held up above its body to the right. Beneath it’s lifted right paw are four rods bound together by two ribbons crossing in the middle. The four rods symbolize the four former colonies of South Africa, and the ribbon represents their unification. To the left of the shield is a springbok facing right, standing up on its hindlegs. At its feet is growing a King protea. To the right of the shield is a gemsbok facing left, standing up on its hindlegs. At its feet is growing a sugarbush protea. Below the shielf is a banner which reads “EX UNITATE VIRES”.To the right of this coat of arms is written “SUID-AFRIKA” (“South Africa” in Afrikaans) and to the left of the coat of arms is written “SOUTH AFRICA”. Between to round bullet points at the bottom is written the year. Two Cape sparrows sitting on the empty branch of a tree, surrounded by other empty branches. The sparrow on the left is a little higher up and its head is turned to the left although its body is facing forward. The sparrow on the right is facing to the right. Just to its right and below the branch is written in tiny lettering “T.S.”. Above this sparrow’s head is written a large “1” followed by a small “c” to its upper right.

A black wildebeest running across a patch of ground from right to left, its front two hooves on the ground, right one in front of left, and the back two hooves in the air, tail flopping behind them. Its head is lowered with horns pointing to the left, as though it is charging. It has a bristly mane standing up on the back of its neck and a “beard” which stretches down from its chin to between its hind legs.A range of mountains can be seen behind the wildebeest in the far distance.

A blue crane standing on a piece of ground facing right, head reared back slightly and right foot lifted as though about to take a step.It has a long, thin neck, ovoid head and sharp beak, and its long tail hangs down behind it. To the right of its chest is written a big “5” and to the upper right a small “c”. Below the line of the ground to the right is written in tiny lettering “P.R.”.
20 Cents 1989 86 An old South African coat of arms with “SUID-AFRIKA” written to its left and “SOUTH AFRICA” written to its right. The year is written at the bottom between two bullet points. On the left, the number “20” written in large lettering, with the zero diagonally below the two. Behind this is a protea bush. To the middle right is an opened protea flower, pointing upwards and slightly to the front. Above and to the left of this is a closed protea bud. Leaves surround them on either side. Below this design is written in tiny lettering “T.S.”

Above the shield are two traditional Zulu weapons, the assegaai and the knobkierie, crossed, with the assegaai facing left and the knobkierie facing right. Above where these two weapons cross is a geometric representation of a King protea. Flanking the shield on either side are wheat ears, one on the left and one on the right. Outside of these are two elephant tusks on each side, connected at the bottom by a banner reading “!KE E: /XARRA //KE” (translated from the |Xam language as “Diverse people unite”).With wings outstretched above the tusks on either side (which represent the egg from which the new South African nation hatched) and partially obscured by the protea is a secretary bird, head turned to the left, with feathers streaming out behind its head. Above its head is a seven-pointed crown representing the sun.Above this coat of arms is written the year. A blue crane standing on a piece of ground slanting down to the left on the right side of the coin, facing left, head reared back slightly and left foot lifted as though about to take a step.It has a long, thin neck, ovoid head and sharp beak, and its long tail hangs down behind it. To the left of its chest is written “5c”.The five is more than twice as big as the “c”. Below the line of the ground to the left is written in tiny lettering “GJR”.

There are three flowers, one to the lower right, an open flower with statem poking out the middle, one to the upper left, also opened with stamen visible, and one unopened bud, completely vertical, stretching up to the top of the coin. Between the two open flowers to the left is a large, flat lily leaf. Below this is written in tiny lettering “RCM”. Above the flower on the right is written “10c”,the zero diagonally above the one, and with the “c” slightly lower than both digits. The rim of the coin is a nonagon.

At the bottom of the coin is written in tiny lettering “ALS”. The rim of the coin is a nonagon. A strelitzia flower pointing from left to right, its crest of orange flower petals spread out above it. To the right of this is written “50c”. The zero is diagonally above the five and the “c” is written below the zero. Written in tiny lettering just to the right of the stem of the strelitzia is “CC”. The rim of the coin is a nonagon.

    the initials ALS stand for Arthur L. Sutherland, the chief die maker in the RSA mint.

    RCM might be the Royal Canadian Mint, but I always thought all RSA coins were made in the South African Mint:
