1 Pengő 1941 521 In the center is the Hungarian coat of arms. This consists of a shield with a crown on top. The left half of the shield has eight horizontal stripes of alternating colors. The right half of the shield consists of a double cross (a normal Christian cross but with a shorter horizontal piece above the the main horizontal bar), at the base of which is a small crown. Below this is a representation of three small hills which looks like a cloud. The crown has a jewelled band at the bottom above which are rounded and pointed rays alternating. The crown is rounded at the top, with two crossing corona latina, and there is a beaded cross on the top which is tilted slightly to the left. Written in a ring around the edge of the coin are the words “MAGYAR KIRÁLYSÁG” (meaning “Kingdom of Hungary”). A large number “1” about half the height of the coin at the top, below which is written the demonination, “PENGŐ”. Below this are two horizontal S-shaped scroll lines which meet in the middle. There is a small dot above the point where they meet and below them is written in small lettering “SE”. At the bottom of the coin is written the year, and emanating outwards from it on either side to border the coin is a wreath, which has clusters of three leaves separated by small clusters of berries.
2 Pengő 1943 522.1 The Hungarian coat of arms surrounded by a circle which starts and ends on either side of the headband of the crown. Outside of this circle is written in a ring “- MAGYAR – KIRÁLYSÁG – (YEAR) -”. A circle in the center of the coin about two-thirds of the diameter of the coin. Inside this circle is written a large “2” above and below, along the edge of the circle, “PENGŐ”. Surrounding this circle is a wreath with clusters of three leaves separated by small clusters of berries.
5 Pengő 1945 525 The parliament building of Hungary, with a central dome on a high tower. This is flanked by a tall turret on either side. Further away from the center are two lower rectangular towers on either side, each with turrets at their corners. Directly below the central tower is written in small lettering “PRÒBAVERET” (meaning “pattern coin”). Around the top of the coin is written “MAGYAR – ÁLLAMI” (meaning “State of Hungary”) and around the bottom of the coin is written “VÁLTÓPÉNZ” (possible translation “currency transmission”). The coat of arms of Hungary (shield and crown) with four vine leaves emanating from behind the shield, two on either side. Below the leaves on either side are two stylized sheaves of wheat (consisting of triangles and straight lines), pointing directly outward and horizontal from the shield. Underneath each wheat sheaf is a bunch of grapes in an upside-down triangle shape, each bunch having ten grapes. The point at the bottom of the shield divides the four small digits of the year into two groups of two digits. Right below this is written a large “5” and below this along the edge of the coin is written “PENGŐ”.

2 Pengő 1939 511 The Hungarian coat of arms but with two angels, one on either side, each holding up the crown with one hand. The angels are in profile, both facing the crown in the the center, their wings aloft and pointing to the edge of the coin. They have halos and are wearing long dresses which flow down to their ankles. The shield is bordered along its two bottom edges by sixteen tiny crosses. Below the shield is a wreath with oak leaves on the right-hand side, and straight, spiky leaves on the left-hand side. This entire insignia (save the overlap from the angels’ wings) is surrounded by a circle. Inside the top of the circle is the outline of some clouds. Outside the circle at the top of the coin is written “MAGYAR – KIRÁLYSÁG” and at the bottom is written “2 PENGŐ”. Between these two phrases on either side is what looks like an old English “f” followed by a club symbol followed by another old English “f”. Just inside the rim of the coin is a tiny scalloped pattern. The Madonna seated cross-legged and draped in a length of cloth with Jesus, his left arm reaching upward, seated on her knee to the right. They both have halos behind their heads and the Madonna is also wearing a crown similar to that in the coat of arms. Behind them is a silhouette of a radiant sun. Around the edge of the coin to the left is written “MAGYARORSZAG” and to the right is written “VEDASSZONYA”. At the bottom is written the year, with a dot on either side separating it from the other script. Just inside the rim of the coin is a tiny scalloped pattern.
5 Pengő 1938 516 The Hungarian coat of arms with a scepter and a sword crossing at an almost horizontal angle. The scepter is angled from left to right and behind the sword. The sword is angled from right to left. Protruding from behind the shield on the left can be seen an oak branch. Protruding from behind the shield on the right is a number of crocuses. A halo can be seen glowing in a circle behind the crown. In line with the bottom of the double cross on the shield and dissected by the shield is the year, divided into two digits on either side, each with the small dot on the outside. At the top is written “* MAGYAR – KIRÁLYSÁG *” and at the bottom is written “-5-PENGŐ-”. Just inside the rim of the coin is a tiny scalloped pattern. A profile of Stephan the First of Hungary (Saint Stephan) facing left with a prominent beard and moustache and wavy hair flowing down to his shoulders. He wears a rounded crown with a cross on top. He is also wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a royal tunic complete with edging and a jewel clasp at the shoulder. Surrounding his entire head in an orb of light is a circle representing his halo. Around the left edge of the coin is written “- SZT-ISTVÁN-” (translation: “Saint Stephan”). Along the right edge is written his dates. A small sun symbol followed by “969 + 1308 -”. Just inside the rim of the coin is a tiny scalloped pattern.
5 Pengő 1939 517 A left-facing profile of Governor Miklós Horthy of Hungary, with left parting and short hair slicked back. He is wearing full navy uniform, having served as an admiral prior to the end of World War I. A tasseled epaulette and military badges can be seen on his left shoulder and chest respectively. Around the edge of the coin is written “VITÉZ – NAGYBÁNYAI – HORTHY – MIKLÓS – MAGYARORSZÁG – KORMÁNYZÓJA” (Translation: “Vitéz Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya, Regent of Hungary”). The Hungarian coat of arms held up by two angels and with a halo over the crown. The angel on the left has her arms down and holding the shield, while the angel on the right has her left arm bent at the elbow and the wrist and holding the sign. Both angels have their hair pinned up into buns, they are wearing flowing, floor-length dresses, and have their wings folded behind them. The bottom tip of the shield separates the four-digit year into two groups of two digits. Below this is a horizontal line representing the ground. Below this line is written “5PENGŐ” with no space between the words but “5” is larger than “PENGŐ”. Below this is a small mark that says “BP.”. At the top of the coin is written “MAGYAR KIRÁLYSÁG”.
1 Denar 1510 27 A coat of arms consisting of a eagle in the center surrounded by a border, horizontal stripes on the left,and a double cross in the top right corner and a man riding a horse in the bottom right corner.This coat of arms is surrounded by a rope-like circle outside of which is written “WLADISLAI – R – VNGAR – (year)”. The points between each word are five-petalled flowers. A seated Madonna, draped in cloth, holding the baby Jesus in her arms. They are circled by a rope-like pattern outside if which appear the words “PATRONA” on the right and “VNGARIE” on the left. Before and after each word is a five-petalled flower.

Below is a large “X” enclosed in four scroll shapes to form a rounded rectangle. On the left and right of this rectangle, the scrolls are separated by a small flower bud shape.

The regent crown of Hungary, consisting of a diadem above which is two corona latina cross, on top of which sits the jewelled cross, tilting slightly to the right. There are seven beaded strings with crosses at the bottom hanging from the crown. Below is written a big “10” and on the next line “KRAJCZÁR”. Below this is written the year. At the bottom of the coin are two olive branches which meet at the bottom. There is a mint mark directly above this point. At the top of the coin on either side of the crown is written “VÁLTÓ PÉNZ”. The rim is lining with a small scalloped pattern.

Each angel is wearing a long robe and is bending her knees slightly, the knee of the outside leg bent even more so that the calf is almost horizontal.Below the shield is are two olive branches which cross at the bottom. Below this is written “1*F” (standing for one forint). This dissects a phrase written around the edge of the coin, “MAGYAR ORSZÁG AP. KIRÁLYA” (“King of Hungary”), falling between ORSZÁG and AP. Above the left angel’s wings is written the date. The rim is lined with a small scalloped pattern.

A man in armor (Árpád, considered the founder of Hungary) riding a horse, facing from right to left on a three-quarter diagonal. The man has an axe tucked behind his belt buckle and is wearing a winged helmet and a round shield on his thigh. He is standing up on his stirrups and his left hand is pointing down, index finger extended, as though he is giving a command. The horse is being led by a woman in flowing dress on the left, its right leg lifted as though about to take a step. To the right of the horse is a soldier wearing a tunic and holding a sword in his right hand. In his left hand he is grasping the sheath of his sword, which is attached to his belt. The faces of two more soldiers can be seen in the background.

A large “50” across the top half of the coin, behind which can be seen two crocuses, one pointing to the left and the other to the right. It looks just like the joins between a trampoline and its frame. A large “2” takes up the majority of the height of the coin. The four digits of the date fall on either side of this in two-digit groups. Just below the base of the 2 is written in small lettering “BP.” and at the bottom of the coin is written “FORINT”. This side of the coin has the same interesting pattern inside the rim as the obverse.

    BP is the mint mark for BudaPest.
    Hungary has other mint marks as well:
    B, K and KB, which are used for coins minted in Kremnitz (Körmöcbánya in Hungarian), which is a mining town in central Slovakia.
    I suppose you already knew that, but others might not.
